It’s the most wonderful time to get out and PLAY!

It’s the holiday season; the time of year friends and families get together to enjoy hot chocolate, tasty food and yummy sugar cookies. Just thinking of all the festivities makes us feel merry and bright. With the holiday season in full swing, it can be all too easy to forget our habits to stay active and play. Making time to play will reduce your stress and boost your depleted energy levels. Plus, when you hit the New Year, you’ll already have a head start on that 2018 New Year’s resolution to stay active and play every day.

Ten ways to play throughout the holiday season

  1. Shoot some hoops or organize your own private skate with friends and family, plan a party or swim. Beginning Dec. 1, you can rent gyms, pools, ice, community rooms and auditoriums for 40 per cent off the regular prime time rate.
  1. Come down to the Waterfront at Downtown Burlington anytime from Dec. 3 to Jan. 7 to check out the Festival of Lights in Spencer Smith Park. Then head over to Rotary Centennial Pond where you can skate all winter, weather permitting, for free!
  1. Holiday Free Skating takes place throughout the holiday season, thanks to our friends at Tim Hortons. The fun begins Dec. 23, 2017 until Jan. 7, 2018.
  1. The city has partnered with local volunteers in your neighbourhood to create four neighbourhood rinks in City of Burlington parks, weather dependent, of course. burlington.ca/neighbourhoodrink.
  1. Shinny Hockey is a great way to get active in the game without having the commitment of belonging to an organized league. Burlington has lots of drop-in opportunities to participate, with dedicated times for youth, adult, women and adult 55+.
  1. Tobogganing is a winter tradition in Canada and fun for the entire family. Six city parks have been designated for safe tobogganing. Check them out along with some safety tips at burlington.ca/tobogganing.
  1. Go for a swim. It may be cold outside but inside, the pools are warm. Both recreational and lap swims are available all year.
  1. Kickoff the New Year and Drop-in 2 Play with us. We offer a variety of drop-in activities to choose from. Activities like pickleball, fitness classes, game and cards and much more.  All ages, no initiation fee, no membership required, no monthly commitments. Just drop-in to play for as low as $1.75 to $8.30 per class.
  1. Let the force be with you in 2018! Join us at Tansley Woods Community Centre for a free family event that includes a free swim, crafts, meet & greet characters and more! Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  1. Sign the kids up to participate in one of our Winter Break camps or drop into Family Play Fit at Brant Hills Community Centre and Tansley Woods gymnasiums and try our physical literacy obstacle course as a family with children ages five months to eight years of age.

Gift of Play

As you go about your holiday shopping, remember you can always give the gift of play to that special someone in your life. Holiday gift cards are available at designated community centres and can be used for any of the City of Burlington recreation programs, drop-in programs and memberships. Tyandaga Golf Course also has gift cards for sale that can be used at the pro shop, for membership or lessons. And remember, while golf season is over, you are always welcome to hike, snowshoe or toboggan on the course throughout the winter season.
