TEAM: Play builds teams and helps with conflict resolution skills:

This week on the Play calendar is Sports Week.

It might be years since you strapped on your volleyball knee pads or practiced your three point shots. That’s OK! You can work to get in better shape for your chosen sport by getting out and playing. Find a teammate who needs to work on speed drill, or kickball skills at a local park on the weekend. There is an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence on the positive effects of sport and physical activity has as part of a healthy lifestyle. The positive, direct effects of engaging in regular physical activity are particularly apparent in the prevention of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression and osteoporosis.


Team play also provides important life lessons in personal values, respect for diversity of individuals of their teammates, referees and sports officials.

These experiences at a young age can influence children throughout their lives such as when it comes to working in the workplace with peers and authority figures. Learning to compromise is also an important value that supported through team sports including getting along with others, exposure to a variety of ideas, perspectives and points of view. We also learn to appreciate that “every one” has an important role to play to contribute to overall success.


Another value of Team Sports is simply meeting new people. Sure we can meet people at work, online or at a coffeehouse. But there’s no better camaraderie than what you build with your teammates. Maybe you’re new to town or you just need another venue to meet people your age with your interests. Joining an adult sports league, cycling or triathlon club are great opportunities to meet new people. You may also think about getting a membership for swimming, skating, Tyandaga Golf Course, tennis club or Burlington Seniors Centre.
