Studies show that as humans, play is built into our genetic code. Play teaches us how to manage or change our negative emotions, and it is the foundation for sound mental, physical, and emotional health. Play can make work seem like pleasure, and aside from this, it is just plain fun! It creates laughter and freedom that can instantly reduce stress and add a feeling of relaxation to our daily living.
Health care professional recommend physical activity as a key ingredient to any stress management initiative. Playing sports and regular fitness routines can help to calm your mind. When we are at play, mood boosting hormones inside the brain called endorphins whirl through your system and generate a happy feeling.
Play relieves stress by drawing your concentration toward your activity and away from that pile of responsibilities waiting for you at home and at work. As you swing your tennis racquet at your local tennis court , paddle your kayak on Lake Ontario, participate in a yoga class at The Beachway or learn to play a musical instrument at the Music Centre you focus on your body’s movements and temporarily forget about your other stress points.
So, when you feel the stress of life on your shoulders, don’t cry, don’t panic, and don’t lock yourself in a room. Play a board game. Engage your kid in a round of catch. Go for a walk, run or cycle, fly a kite. PLAY, Every day. You’ll take that weight right off your shoulders.
